Green Tourism BusinessScheme Goldstar Award

We were shortlisted for the above award and are one of the top 3% greenest businesses in the UK, however we were not quite green enough.  We are though, extremely pleased to  have got so far.  Below is a quote from one of our references who has been kind enough to let us know what they said.

''Malkin Tower is an excellent ambassador for sustatainable tourism in the Forest of Bowland AONB.  They have been active members of our sustainable tourism business network since it began in 2006, and are held as an example of good sustainable practice for partners and other organisations visiting the area.  They were also one of the first 16 businesses to receive Europen Charter Business status, which demonstrates partnership working with the AONB in the development of sustainable tourism within the protected area.

Malkin Tower has demonstrated an excellent commitment to monitoring energy, water and waste and setting and reviewing targets.  The business utilises its rural location and farm environment very well and encourages visitors to explore the wildlife and netweork of footpaths on the doorstep.  The business is excellent at demonstrating their environmental commitment to visitors and encouring them to get involved with their efforts - an example of this is through the active promotiion of their visitor charter and encouraging their visitors to sign upt to it.

Testament to their green commitment has been the various awards that the business has received in recent years.  In particular the Lancashire and Blackpool tourist board's sustainable tourism award which they receive in 2009''.

GOOD FRIDAY 2012

On Good Friday 2012 it will be 400 years since the Pendle Witches had their last meeting.

To celebrate we have invited Blacko Primary School to come and help us in establishing if Malkin Tower is the original place where the meeting took place.  The Children dressed up one very wet summers day this year and walked from school to Malkin Tower.  We are hoping to arrange a small competition at the school with the winners being able to come up and help a few local archeologists dig where local historians think  the remains of a small shack may be.

GREEN TOURISM BUSINESS SCHEME

We have maintained our Gold in Green Tourism.  Again thank you to all our guest who help us by recycling, turning unnecessary lights off and turning the heating down.

We have provided recylce bins for plastics, paper, bottles and tins and ask that all guest separate their rubbish.
We planted many thousands of trees and hedgerows on the farm to create habitats for wild birds and animals.
We aim to plant at least 50 trees per year.
We are replacing all light bulbs with low energy bulbs.
We harvest our rain water.
We have removed the oil Esse range from Demdyke Cottage and installed an electric cooker so that we are not burning oil 24
hours a day, 365 days a year.
We have an environment charter in place for those interested.
We welcome any suggestions/ideas you may have. You can purchase a tree and we will plant it here at Malkin Tower.
We hope that guests will support us in an effort to conserve energy, by simply turning off unnecessary lights, inside and out, ensuring that electric heaters are not left on unnecessarily. We have our own water system and we ask that guest use water considerately.
