Environmental Policy

At Malkin Tower we try to minimise our environmental impact while making sure your stay here with us is as enjoyable as possible. As part of this aim we have joined the Green Tourism Business scheme which provides accreditation and encouragement for tourism businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their activities and by encouraging sustainable practices ensures the continued enjoyment of the environment around us for future generations. In recognition of our commitment we have been awarded a Gold Award by the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

Our commitment:

• We have provided recylce bins for plastics, paper, bottles and tins and ask that all guests separate their rubbish.
• We planted many thousands of native trees and hedgerows on the farm to create habitats for wild birds, insects and animals.
• We aim to plant at least 50 native trees per year.
• We have put up several birdboxes suitable for different species.
• We are replacing all light bulbs with low energy bulbs.
• We harvest our rain water.
• We provide recycled paper products such as toilet rolls for guests use.
• We use environmentally friendly cleaning products.
• We have removed the oil Esse range from Demdyke Cottage and installed an electric cooker so that we are not burning oil 24
  hours a day, 365 days a year.
• We are happy to take to the recycling centre any hazardous waste such as used batteries, for you.
• We have an environment charter in place for those interested.
• Wherever possible we support local producers, shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes.
• We promote local tourist attractions, cultural events.
• We encourage non car based activities for our guests, by providing information on activites such as cycling, walking and wildlife watching in the area.
• Our web host 1&1 is proud to be the first large web host who relies solely on renewable energy. 1&1 now uses wind, water and solar power in accordance with the Renewable Energy Certification System (RECS).
• Replace domestic appliances with more energy efficient models when they need replacing.

We welcome any suggestions/ideas you may have. You can purchase a tree and we will plant it here at Malkin Tower.

We hope that guests will support us in an effort to conserve energy, by simply turning off unnecessary lights, inside and out, ensuring that electric heaters are not left on unnecessarily and not leaving appliances on standby. We have our own water system and we ask that guest use water considerately.

We support Fairtrade and the aims of Euro Parc European Charter for sustainable tourism in protected areas and we are a member of Bowland Charter Assured and the Forest of Bowland Sustainable Tourism Business Network
